Arts and Cultural Management
Description of the theme course: Cultural Management encompasses all the arts from live performance (music, dance drama) to exhibiting artefacts and providing documentation to the public. Arts and Cultural management is not just about how a cultural institution is managed but asking oneself what exactly are these institutions for?
To have a better understanding of how cultural management came to be, the following key issues will be discussed throughout the lessons:
* The history of museums: concept of memorabilia and the first collectors.
* The importance of heritage and the creation of world institutions such as UNESCO and ICOM.
* The role of the Public and its relationship with “Culture”.
* The ideology behind the making of a museum in the US and dealing with sensitive heritage (colonial history and Nazi monuments).
* Protecting other forms of heritage such as natural landscapes, conservation problems arising from non-material (spoken) ancestral heritage and safeguarding disappearing languages.
Learning outcomes: to develop vocabulary, through listening, video and analysing texts. Students will learn to process the information effectively in English. Students will also learn about the writing process related to multi-paragraph essays and papers, writing a professional letter of application, story-telling and verb forms and speaking to an audience to be more effective in their verbal communication.
Resources: photocopies of texts and videos.
